Saint James Music Academy (SJMA) provides underserved inner-city youth with opportunities to learn, play and grow through the power of collaborative music-making. Built on values such as building community, honouring individuality, and pursuing excellence, SJMA has been enriching the lives of children in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside since 2007.
SJMA is Canada’s first El Sistema inspired program. El Sistema, which started in Venezuela in 1975, uses classical music education as a vehicle of social change. It is credited for reaching over 1 million children in over 60 countries around the world. SJMA embraces these principles to deliver a Core After-School Program for children from grades 2 to 12. Students enjoy safe after-school care, a nutritious meal at the start of the afternoon, and music instruction from an exceptional faculty. All children participate in orchestra and choir, while senior students have access to workshops, chamber music, jazz and fiddle ensembles.
St James Music Academy is supported by a long list of illustrious community partners such as Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, TELUS and The University of British Columbia. Starting in 2019, Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir has committed to a series of fundraising concerts over several years in support of SJMA.
Join us on Friday 29th November at Christ Church Cathedral for a joyous evening of Christmas music in partnership with the choirs of St James Music Academy. Help us fill the house to raise funds for this wonderful organization!
