More Than Music

Founded in 1979, the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir has grown from a small group of Welsh expatriates into a diverse, welcoming community of men from all walks of life. While our roots are Welsh, we embrace men from every background and generation. Whether you’re 25 or 85, new to singing or experienced, you’ll find your place in our choir family.

We understand men face unique challenges—pressure to stay strong, difficulty expressing emotions, modern isolation. In our choir, we’ve discovered music’s power to heal, connect, and strengthen the human spirit. Singing together creates a safe space where men find genuine connection, combat loneliness, and support each other through life’s moments.

The Power of Male Voices

We present traditional and contemporary choral music with the unique resonance of male voices in four-part harmony. Our performances reflect our Celtic heritage—from cathedral solemnity to pub camaraderie—while embracing new music and the diverse ethnicities of our choir and communities.

As an auditioned choir, we maintain high musical standards while having fun with our music, each other, and our audiences. We take pride in passing along our love of song to the young performers we support.

Music has the power to heal what medicine cannot touch and bring together what life has pulled apart. In our choir, men find not just their singing voice, but their truest voice—where strength and tenderness coexist, and showing up for each other is as natural as breathing together in song.

Alison Nixon, Music Director

Raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alison studied violin at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music, Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and the International Menuhin School of Music in Switzerland. There she met her husband Darryl, who brought her to Canada as a young bride.

“Choir Directing is an extraordinary alchemy of open hearted love of both music, and those I direct. I am incredibly privileged to work with the hearts and minds of choir members.”

Over her extensive career, Alison has conducted men’s, women’s, and mixed choirs, directing almost all major choral works while remaining stirred by both simple folk songs and complex contemporary pieces like Lauridsen. She also serves as Music Director at North Shore Unitarian Church and teaches violin on the North Shore and her home community of Bowen Island.
